Description
These crispy, sweet, and gluten-free baked apple chips are an easy, foolproof snack that feels indulgent yet healthy. Made with simple ingredients like apples, cinnamon, sugar, and a honey drizzle, they are perfect for any time of day.
Ingredients
- 3 large apples (such as Honeycrisp or Fuji), cored and sliced into 1/8-inch rings
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
- 2–3 tablespoons honey (for drizzle)
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice (optional, to prevent browning)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 225°F (107°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Wash and core the apples. Slice them crosswise into rings approximately 1/8-inch thick, ensuring uniform thickness for even baking.
- Place apple slices in a large bowl. Sprinkle with granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, and sea salt. Toss gently with hands until every slice is evenly coated. Add lemon juice if using.
- Arrange apple slices in a single layer on the prepared baking sheets, ensuring they do not overlap to allow for proper air circulation.
- Bake for 45-60 minutes, or until edges curl slightly, centers look translucent and dry, and chips feel firm but not brittle.
- Remove from oven and let cool on pans for 5 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely; this step is crucial for achieving crispiness.
- Once completely cool, drizzle with honey in a zigzag pattern. Optionally dust with extra cinnamon.
- Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.
Notes
Uniform slices are essential for even baking; use a mandoline if possible. Low and slow baking at 225°F prevents burning while drying the apples. If chips are chewy, bake for 10 more minutes. If they get soft due to humidity, re-crisp in a 200°F oven for 5 minutes. Avoid Red Delicious apples as they turn to mush.
