Description
An elegant yet simple holiday dessert featuring fresh figs roasted with honey and cinnamon on a flaky puff pastry base. Ready in under 45 minutes, this tart is perfect for autumn gatherings and can be made gluten-free or vegan.
Ingredients
- 2 sheets puff pastry (450g), thawed
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1.5 pounds fresh figs, halved lengthwise
- ¼ cup honey
- 1 large lemon, juiced (approx. 1 tablespoon)
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Flaky sea salt, for garnish
- Fresh mint leaves, for garnish
- Whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, for serving (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). If using a skillet, place it in the oven to preheat. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper if not using a skillet.
- Unroll puff pastry onto a lightly floured surface. Roll out slightly if needed to fit your pan. Prick the center with a fork to prevent puffing, but leave edges intact. Brush edges with melted butter.
- In a small saucepan, combine honey, lemon juice, cinnamon, and vanilla. Heat over low heat for 1-2 minutes until warm and runny. Do not boil.
- Arrange fig halves cut-side up on the pastry in a circular pattern, overlapping slightly.
- Brush figs generously with the honey glaze. Sprinkle granulated sugar evenly over the top.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes until pastry is golden brown and puffed, and figs are caramelized. Cover with foil if browning too quickly.
- Cool on a rack for 10 minutes to allow glaze to set. Sprinkle with flaky sea salt and garnish with mint. Serve warm.
Notes
Keep puff pastry cold until baking to ensure flaky layers. If using dried figs, rehydrate in warm water for 20 minutes first. For a make-ahead option, assemble up to 4 hours ahead and refrigerate. Store leftovers at room temperature for up to 2 days; reheat in oven at 350°F to restore crispness.
